American Ski Resorts Close Early

Reports from Mountain News Corporation, snow report publishers, suggest that ski resorts in the USA are closing earlier than in previous years, an entirely different story to that reported a week previous. Initial reports were that more than 10 American ski areas remained open, but apparently many of these have now confirmed they are closing after the first weekend in May, in some cases earlier than expected.

In Colorado, Arapahoe Basin closed on 6 May, its earliest closure for just over 30 seasons. In Washington, there are mixed reports; White Pass also closed on 6 May. Crystal Mountain on the other hand, has said it will remain open at weekends for as long as the snow lasts, definitely until the end of May, as it has received 48cm of fresh snow in the past few days. California is a similar story; Donner Ski Ranch is open at weekends ?until the snow has gone? and was reporting a near 3m base a few days ago. Kirkwood, traditionally a beneficiary of vast spring snowfalls, has not yet decided if it will re-open.

The Canadian ski resorts tell a different story. The ski areas of Banff and Lake Louise in Alberta have had record breaking snow this season, seeing some of the best snow in Western North America. The area is famed for its ?champagne powder?; very dry and light snow ideal for skiers. Sunshine Village has been amongst the record breakers with over 10m total snowfall. Sunshine remains open until 21 May; one of the longest seasons in North America.

The 2011/12 season has been spectacular for the Lake Louise Ski Area too, so much so that it has announced a Spring Splash bonus weekend. ?We are always looking for ways to let our valued seasons pass and Louise Plus Card holders know we appreciate their loyalty, so this is what the bonus weekend is all about,? says Proprietor Charlie Locke. The ski resort will now close on 13 May.
